Meditation for Beginners

Do you ever think, “It would be nice to have a meditation practice, but…” I’m not good at it. I don’t have time. My mind wanders too much. I have too many other things to do. It’s hard to get a quiet moment to myself…OR maybe you do try to find time for meditation, but you’ve never quite found that sweet spot. I used to think that I wasn’t good at meditating, or at least that I didn’t have enough time to get good at it and see real results.

Remembering that time in my life causes me to release a deep sigh of relief, because now I know the truth that I’m so excited to share with you today: Meditation is for everyone, especially beginners. Meditation is a practice, so you can’t do it wrong, and you can’t do it for not long enough. And anything inside you that tells you any different—Well, that is EXACTLY the voice meditation is meant to silence. Taking a break from that Inner Critic, if even just a short break—even 2 minutes, can make a huge difference in your present moment.

Whether you’re a true beginner, or if you have experience with meditation, but you want to go deeper; this episode is the perfect place for you to start.

I learned this meditation out of necessity. I used to perform as a singer. Every night, moments before I took the stage, WOW—my nerves began to rattle me to the core. I needed something powerful to restore me to center. Something that worked quick and on the spot, so that I could be free to command that stage and sing from my heart. My studies brought me to Taoism, which consists of short proverbs, little stories meant to bring you back into the flow and ease of living. From these proverbs, I discovered the power of the mini-meditation. And the most amazing thing about this meditation that we are going to do together in this episode, is that Transcendental, one of the most advanced forms of meditation, begins right here with this exercise. It’s like a gateway to the cosmos.

So anyway, I’m waiting backstage knowing that in just 2 or 3 minutes I need to step out in front of this audience and sing with all my might. My heart is pounding. I can hear the blood rushing. My stomach is twisted into knots. Right there, behind the curtain, I would do my miracle mini-meditation, and be transported to that sweet spot that is everywhere and nowhere. The sounds of the stage and the crowd fade into the background, and I’m just given over to the vastness of space, for just a minute or two. When I open my eyes, free from that restrictive, binding energy, sometimes I twirl like a child, because I felt so light. After that, all I need to do is float onto that stage and feel the song ring out from deep within my center. It’s amazing.

Do you have little stories like that? Moments when you glimpsed the vastness, and felt the space release you from all worldly pressures? I’d love to hear them if you do. I find it fun, and fascinating. Magical, even. So please do share your stories with me. I love to watch you grow. As always, remember that love is Spirit, and Spirit is love. I love you, and I’m glad you are a part of the Soul Manifesto community.
